So, last night one of my 16 year-old daughters told me that she has decided her first car will be a Datsun 510. This pleases me greatly. :')

Nice daughter you got there. I mean that in the least creepy way possible. Maybe.

Raising them right!

Strange but awesome choice! I wanted a 240z but my father said they were too much work. Little did he figure the car he approved would spend half of its life in the shop.

Saw the headline as, "My daughter wants a Dime Bag"
That would have been a whooooooooooole nother conversation.

A great choice for a first car. You have twins right? What does the other one want?

LOL! As the father of four teens, I have found it is just best to embrace my inner creep. It is often the most efficient way to embarrass them, after all >:)

Make sure it's a manual.

Well actually I'm 16 too so I'm not creepin. Unless I actually am creepin. You will never know!

Triplets. The other two are less into the particulars of driving. One is spending a year abroad so no imminent need there. The other one is really attracted to old Beetles.

Congratulations. You can accept your Oppositelock Most Successful Parenting Award once she buys it*. Or maybe even if she doesn't.
*Stanced or car does not count

That's great! And when she decides to resell, it'll be a piece of cake!
(Don't hit me please.)

Then take her to an autocross or track day. Or both.

Sixteen year old boy
Not a creep

Please find one in that exact color. Reasons:
1. It looks awesome
2. Other drivers will be less likely to not see her car and hit her
3. She'll have to watch her speed since she'll stick out to cops

I'm considering a Volvo 245 or Saab 99 for my first car, but it won't happen that soon, since my family and I have no extra money.

I'm creepin anyway

Just goes to show you that nurture can be more powerful than nature. Congrats Brian.

SCANDALOUS!
I mean, she is FAILING at her attempt to cover up those terrible wheels!

Heh ... I can see this going more along the lines of, "Hey Sweetheart let's trade cars today." "Well ... ok but why are you taking your helmet?"
![]() 10/22/2013 at 19:23 |
|
I said the same to my dad at 14, and was told I was bound to die upon hitting my first obstacle. Three years later, and I haven't hit anything yet, but hey, who knows.
Definitely cool, but...you might want to think about that one a bit. Not the safest of all cars, especially in a world of 2-ton SUVs

To be clear she has some saving to do, too. In the past few months she paid for her new iPhone and Macbook Pro so it probably won't happen until late summer. I'm really big on kids paying for their first car since it teaches them far more about life than them getting a car handed to them.

I have triplet daughters. Doesn't that mean at least one of them is a "spare?"
;)

So am I. I've always wondered how many people on Oppo are barley old enough to drive. I got my licence in June.

I got mine in March

That's no good

It's terrible..the instant I turn 15 1/2 though, I'm gonna get mine. But I know how to drive a manual already, and drift, do burnouts and donuts. So some redemption there.

What if I am possibly younger than that. Don't want to be to young for kinja and Oppo, is there such thing? I haven't given my age away yet anyway though.
![]() 10/22/2013 at 20:03 |

I'm 17. Oppo is a young crowd.

You have an awesome daughter there.
I remember when my little brother wants a 300TD few months ago, which is awesome!

My mom wants me to do lifeguarding before getting my driver's, although I'm of age.

I am nineteen and suddenly mature.

Best of luck finding one, as a 16 year old I've been looking around my local classifieds and there's only one or two of them.
Don't even get me started on manual 240 wagons.

Good to see some people are raising their kids right!
Well done.

I'm 30, and suddenly a crotchety old man...
Or not...I actually hired a 95 year old this week...nothing will make you feel younger than someone saying '...back during the war...' while telling a story.

When I was 17 I wanted to buy a '71 Chevelle. It was running, driving, licensed, and insured. My parents thought it would be to much work. A few weeks later, my stepdad came home with a '89 Camaro...with no motor.

I'm 28 and feeling the same way. We're surrounded by youngins! They need to get off our lawn dammit, and pull up their pants, and put their hats on right, and so an and so forth.

I have to first save up for performance driving schools and university soon, so I don't see myself being able to get a car before the end of Grade 12 (in 11 now).
I don't ever get stuff handed to me because I'm not from a rich background, so I'm used to saving up for what I do want, like I'm using a cheap cellphone and plan to save on monthly bills.

We are the future. My brethren and will take over your country, commandeer your businesses, and purchase your used cars.

That's fine, I was done with them anyhow.....though you may want to check any car you get from me for worn bushings, blown shocks, broken endlinks, and worn brakes....I hear autocross and track days are hard on those bits.
![]() 10/23/2013 at 08:50 |

What did you hire the 95-year old for? That sounds amazing.

Studio Teacher...I work on TV commercials, and we had a kid in our spot. Whenever we have a kid we are required to hire a studio teacher, which is someone who is certified as a teacher and as a social worker.

Awesome.
What kind of commercials do you do?
